Public Policy Manager [Netherlands]

Are you passionate about policy development and sustainability? Do you know your way around global or regional policy landscapes and decision-making? The World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) is looking for a Public Policy Manager.

WBA is building a movement to measure and incentivise business impact towards a sustainable future that works for everyone. The private sector has a crucial role to play in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but to boost companies’ motivation, there needs to be real change in the way their impact is measured. That’s why WBA develops benchmarks that compare companies’ performance on the SDGs. We strengthen, support, and complement our benchmarks through active engagement with civil society, financial institutions, business networks, policymakers and regulators so that our benchmarks are relevant and used by all, accelerating a race to the top. WBA’s approach with policymakers focuses on three distinct but interconnected pillars: translating benchmark results into actions for policymakers; advocating system transformation with policymakers; and aligning capital markets with sustainable outcomes, including through supporting a global baseline for corporate sustainability disclosure.

The role of Public Policy Manager is to provide advice and intelligence to WBA of policy developments that have an impact on WBA’s work in assessing corporate progress against the SDGs. You will support WBA’s policy team in building feedback loops to policy-makers and ensuring that WBA’s policy input is evidence-based and relevant. You will also play a key role in convening policy discussions around key global or regional moments.

Working with a dynamic and global team, your role will focus on supporting and inputting into global and regional decision-making processes and public policy to ensure that WBA’s engagement with policymakers serves as a useful feedback loop to inform and strengthen our engagement with relevant stakeholders in the ecosystem.

What you will do in this role:

  • Support the policy team to build, identify and prioritise, and help execute WBA’s policy engagement and to develop policy positions and advocacy opportunities with policymakers.
  • Track relevant Global, Asia and EU public policies by collaborating with governments and organisations at the global (e.g. UN, G20, G7), regional and local (e.g. EU, ASEAN) level.
  • Support the maintaining of critical relationships & networks externally, including by supporting the organisation of events, policy dialogues, and internal dialogues to ensure a feedback loop between policymakers and WBA teams.
  • Anticipate and manage policy issues relevant to corporate accountability and sustainable development.
  • Support the production of background and concept notes, presentations or research briefings on items debated with policymakers. Draft documents, reports, and articles/blogs for internal and external use.

Our Public Policy Manager:

  • 2-4 years of working experience in public policy/sustainability, ideally in an international environment, and a broad understanding of sustainability issues, in particular regarding Nature-Positive Future, Sustainable Cities, and Food Systems.
  • Has experience working in global affairs, public policy and/or political engagement and advocacy; and has knowledge about the SDGs and the work of international institutions, e.g. UN, EU, ASEAN, G20/G7.
  • Capable of building trust and support representing a global organisation, for example with governments and public bodies.
  • Has excellent analytical, English writing and clear communication skills and is able to refine complex issues into easily understandable messages.
  • Can rapidly assimilate new information with a track record of forward thinking and solution building.
  • Is flexible working in an evolving and fast changing environment, a self-starter that has a positive attitude and is able to plan and set priorities.
  • Is able to work across different virtual teams and global cultures, comfortable in an evolving ‘Teal’ working environment that promotes flexibility, self-management and wholeness.
